Search engine optimization is often about making small modifications to parts of our website. These changes driving targeted traffic from search engines to our website. Understanding this process is not possible without understanding how search engines work. Search Engines perform several activities in order to deliver search results. These activities are:

1

Crawling:

Search engines are not humans. Humans Like beautiful user interface, or cool pictures and videos with beautiful sounds. But Search engines are text-driven, far from intelligent creatures that can feel this all beauty as human.

Search Engines search the web Known as Crawling, looking at particular site items, mainly text to get an idea what a site is about. This task is performed by a piece of software, called Crawler or a Spider. Search engines Crawl the web using crawler to see what is there. After the page is crawled, the Next step is to Index its content.

2

Indexing:

Search engines Use spider or Crawler to crawl the website to see what is there. After the page is crawled, Spiders follow links from one page to another and index everything they found on their way. The indexed page is stored in a database from where it can later be retrieved. Actually, the process of indexing is identifying the words that describe the page.

3

Processing:

After the page is stored in a database, when a search request comes, the search engine process it. It compares the search string with the indexed pages in the database. It could be millions of pages contains the search string. The search engine start calculating the Relevancy of each of the pages in its index with the search string.

4

Calculating Relevancy:

After finding the million pages contains the same string, Search engines start to calculate the Relevancy of each page. There are various algorithms to calculate relevancy and each of these algorithms has different way to calculate it. That is why different search engines give different search results pages for the same search string .

5

Retrieving Results:

The last step in search engines activity is retrieving the best matched results. The algorithm calculates the relevancy, find the best matched result and retrieve it to user.

Search engines such as Google Yahoo often update their relevancy algorithm dozens of times per month. When we see changes in our ranking, it is due to an algorithmic shift or something else outside of our control.

Although the basic principle of operation of all search engines is the same, the minor differences between their relevancy algorithms lead to major changes in results relevancy.
