How to create multiple partitions on a flash drive?

USB Flash drives allow us to back up our important data, transfer it from one computer to another, and protect it against substantial data loss. Flash drive usually comes formatted as a single partition by default. But if you need more partitions to organize your files and folder more efficiently, then you are in the right place. In this tutorial, we are going to learn how to create multiple partitions on our flash drive.

① Open Disk Management tool.
② Convert flash drive to NTFS file system.
③ Shrink Volume to create some free space.

The easy way to playing with partitions would be via the windows "Disk Management system" tool. To open Disk management tool, follow the given steps.

① Press Window key + R and type Diskmgmt.msc in text box to open the Disk management tool.
② Or, open window explorer, right click on This PC and go to Manage » Disk Management.

Next, we need to convert our flash drive to NTFS file system. Because New Technology File System (NTFS) is friendly partition as compared to FAT32. Check the current file format of your drive. If the drive is already formatted with NTFS then skip to next step but if the drive isn't formatted with NTFS then follow the given steps to convert it.

① Right click on your flash drive and select Format.
② From file system drop-down menu, select NTFS and click ok to proceed.

Next, system will prompt you to confirm the operations as all your flash drive's data will be lost while formatting the drive to NTFS. If still you didn't backup your data, cancel the process, backup your data to safe place and then start formatting the drive to NTFS.

To create new partitions, we need to create some unallocated space using shrink operation. Follow the steps to shrink the volume.

① Right click on your flash drive and select Shrink volume.
② Enter the size of your new partition in MB and click "Shrink" button to create unallocated space for new partition.

As soon as you click on the shrink button, this would create a new "Unallocated" partition in your flash drive.

In step # 3, we have successfully created some unallocated space, now we can use this space to create new partition. Follow the final step to create new partition.

① Right click on "Unallocated" space and choose New simple volume. A wizard will pop-up, click next to proceed.
② Enter the size for new partition in MB and click next.
③ Assign the drive Letter to the unallocated partition from the drop-down menu. Click next to proceed.
④ Choose the file system (FAT32, NTFS, ExFat) to format the partition and click next to proceed.

A final screen will pop-up which gives you an overview of the settings that you have selected for your partition. Cross check the settings, if everything is in order, click Finish to apply the settings. If there is something you need to change, go back, update the settings and finish the process to create the partition.

In step # 4, we have successfully created two partitions on flash drive. These partitions can be viewed and accessed from your file explorer. All you have to do is open your file explorer, go to "This PC" or simple press "window key + E".
